My Cup Overflows

While looking at some recent Instagram posts, there was one that really caught my eye.   While the exact wording escapes me, it went something like this:

If I am holding a cup of coffee and someone bumps into me, what exactly happens?

If you thought the answer is that coffee will spill out, you would be absolutely correct.

Why would the coffee spill out?

The first thing that would come to your mind is that it spilled out because you were bumped.    You would be wrong.

The reason that coffee spilled out is because there was coffee in the cup.   If it was a hot cup of tea, a cup of hot cocoa, or even a glass of ice water, that is exactly what would have spilled out.

When life shakes you to your very core, what comes out?

The last few months have been overwhelmingly challenging.   My husband ruptured a disc in his neck late last September and what followed was months of discomfort, pain, and uncertainty.    When the disc ruptured, it ruptured and cut off the nerves to the right arm and hand leaving him not able to use them at all.

Using our hands to feed ourselves, shower, and dress in just something we do without even thinking about it until something changes in the blink of an eye.     Marriage is for better or worse; in sickness and in health and just as any wife would do that loves her husband, you do everything you can to help.

Was it easy?   No way!

Were there days that I lost my patience?    Yes!

What was pouring out of me at first was stress, worry, and fear of the unknown.

When meeting with clients, there are so many of them that handle far worse situations than a ruptured disc. My husband would heal.   He would get better.    He will go back to work.

Many people don’t.

How could I let my cup overflow with stress when I have so much to be thankful for?   Love started pouring out in ways I never dreamed of.   Family and friends helped with meals, running errands, and just spending some time to stop and check in.  We had people from our church offering prayers and I know they were heard.  With John not being able to drive, we found the right doctor and right physical therapists that were very accomodating to my work schedule.

Life is going to bump into you.

What is going to overflow from your cup?
