Reach for the Son

As you most likely know, it was important for me to take a little break from social media.   It was important for me because I was getting caught up in conversations that were only adding fuel to dividing people that I love and respect.

I needed time away to pray about how to move forward, how to approach social media in a way that would allow me to stay in contact with family and friends,  and most importantly, how to seek what God wanted from me.

Although I knew this was for the best, it was hard to walk away even for a short time.

I kept myself busy working on gardening projects.   My husband and I started some raised beds indoors and out for vegetables,  started a small countertop Aerogarden so that we can enjoy lettuce year round, and even started a small sprout garden.   We started this to enjoy fresh vegetables as long as we can, but also to help boost our immune systems.

I also cleaned up our flower gardens, moved things around, and made room for a special project that came to me during prayer.

To be perfectly honest, worry and grave concern about what is going on throughout the world and in the United States was taking over my everyday thoughts.   Even when I tried to pray for peace, it was difficult.

Instead of trusting in God like I seem to have to learn over and over again, I wanted to fix the world’s problems.    The truth is only God can do that, but he can do it through us when we trust in him.

So, what is this special project?

I’m calling it “Reach for the Son”.   It involves planting seeds of sunflowers and watching them grow and reach for the sun.

Why sunflowers?

Here are a few very interesting facts about sunflowers:

  1.  Because sunflowers are always focused on the sun, they stand in uniformity.   If you notice a field of sunflowers, every single flower is parallel to the other flowers around them.
  2. Sunflowers focus on the sun for food to help them grow.  Looking towards the son helps them to stand tall and remain strong.
  3. On cloudy days when the sun isn’t shining brightly, the sunflowers turn to one another to help them remain strong.   They literally face one another until the sun comes out from behind the clouds.
  4. Sunflowers will shift and turn their heads towards the sun throughout the day as the earth moves.   They have to adjust to their surroundings to help them thrive.

It is my intention to plant seeds of sunflowers and pray for my family and my friends.   Each seed will have a special prayer for that person said.

It is my hope that others will do the same.   My vision is to see pictures of sunflowers all through social media with a hashtag of “Reach for the Son”.

Reach for the Son because when we focus on the Son of God, we stand in uniformity with him.    When we focus and trust in him, we stand tall and remain strong.    When we can’t see or feel his presence through trials in our life, we lean on one another for strength and adjust our heads towards him to help us to thrive.

As it states in Psalm 133:1 “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”
