Preventative Health Care for Women

Under the Affordable Care Act, health care plans purchased either through the marketplace (Healthcare.gov) or directly through the insurance company must cover the following list of preventative services for women.   These services must be provided without a co-pay and your deductible does not have to be met in order to qualify for this benefit.   You do have to use an in network physician which is one of the reasons Balanced Care recommends checking to make sure your doctors are in the network before purchasing a plan.

The services include:

  • Anemia Screening -Done routinely for pregnant women
  • Breast Cancer Genetic Test Counseling (BRCA) for women at higher risk of breast cancer
  • Breast Cancer Mammography Screenings – Every one or two years for women over 40
  • Breast Cancer Chemoprevention Counseling for women at higher risk of breast cancer
  • Breastfeeding Support and Counseling – Done with trained providers, access to breastfeeding supplies for pregnant and nursing women
  • Cervical Cancer Screening – for sexually active women
  • Chlamydia Infection Screening for younger women and other women at high risk
  • Contraception – Food and Drug Administration approved contraceptive methods, patient education and counseling
  • Domestic and Interpersonal Violence Screening and Counseling for all women
  • Folic Acid supplements for women who may become pregnant
  • Gestational Diabetes Screening for women between 24 – 28 weeks pregnant as well as those women at high risk of developing gestational diabetes
  • Gonorrhea Screening for all women at high risk
  • Hepatitis B Screening for pregnant women at their first prenatal visit
  • HIV screening and counseling for sexually active women
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) DNA Testing – Every three years for women with normal cytology results who are 30 or older
  • Osteoporosis Screening for women over age 60 depending on risk factors
  • Rh Incompatibility Screening for all pregnant women and follow up testing for women at high risk
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections Counseling for sexually active women
  • Syphilis Screening for all pregnant women or other women at high risk
  • Tobacco Use Screening and Interventions for all women
  • Urinary Tract or other Infection Screening for pregnant women
  • Well women visits to get recommended services for women under the age of 65
