Self-Care – Today is a Gift

“Yesterday’s the past; tomorrow’s the future, but today is a gift.  That’s why it is called the present.” – Bill Keane

If you really think about it, we all spend time worrying about the past and the future.

Just this morning, my husband woke up, smiled at me, thanked God for another day together, and then started his day.   It always amazes me that although he can get concerned about things, he doesn’t dwell on what has happened or may happen.   Instead, he rejoices in the day, lives in the moment, and is thankful for every day he gets.

He has been like this from the day I met him almost 43 years ago.

Recently, we talked about this and why it’s important for him to go about his life this way.   His answer was simple – “If I spend time worrying, getting upset, or complaining, it is time wasted.”

He’s absolutely correct!

All we have is the present day.   Yesterday is gone.   The 24 hours in the day before have been spent and tomorrow isn’t even here.

Working in the insurance industry with a specialty in both Health and Medicare Insurance, it can become overwhelming to me to see so many people suffer with injury or illnesses.   It is worth noting, though, that even in the midst of turmoil with their health, the majority of the ones suffering are grateful to have another day.

Instead of worrying, they are doing what they can.

Instead of being concerned about who likes their posts on Facebook, they are more concerned about enjoying the present moments with their loved ones.

They are too busy enjoying the little things in life because they realize that they are actually big things.

How much happier and less stressed we could all be if we all just realized that today is a gift.

Kay Lyons states, “Yesterday is a cancelled check; tomorrow is a promissory note; today is the only cash you have so spend it wisely.”
