For the last few months, the topic of the weekly posts have all had to do with Self-Care.
We talked about the importance of sleep, nutrition, exercise, and just the importance of slowing down to read a book, sit quietly with a cup of coffee, or taking a walk.
As mentioned many times, self-care is different for everyone. For one person, watching a television show to start or end the day may be the best way to take care of themselves. For another, watching television could create more anxiety.
In simple terms, self-care is about being kind to yourself. It’s about knowing when your energy is running on empty and slowing down long enough to recharge. It’s bringing peace into hectic lives.
The reason that I’ve spent so much time on this topic is because it directly relates to your health. When you take care of yourself, your healthcare costs could possibly be lower. We can’t control everything that happens to us, but we can control how self-care helps us when we add it to our lives.
What are the benefits:
- Better physical health and improved resistance to disease
- Enhanced self esteem
- Better productivity
Focusing on self-care that relaxes you will not only help you mentally, but improves your digestion, your cardiovascular functioning, and even helps your body to manage hormones.
When you are kind to yourself, you may believe that you are being selfish for taking time for you. The reality is quite the opposite. The better you take care of yourself, the better you are for your family, friends, and your job.
Being compassionate to yourself allows you to be more compassionate to others. Think about the last time you had someone do a random act of kindness for you such as paying for a toll or a cup of coffee. How did it make you feel and how did it improve your day?
Learning how to say “no” to things that over-extend you only help you concentrate on what really matters to you.
Self-care is critical to the foundation for the way you live.
Take a second or two right now to choose something that makes you feel good and helps to nourish your well being.
Make a commitment to to care for yourself and by doing that, your loved ones and those around you will also benefit.
Self-Care is an act of self-love – you deserve both.
