October is a busy month. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is in October and so is National Dental Hygiene Month. Balanced Care is in the insurance business, but more importantly, we are in the people business. For this reason, we believe in providing as much information and education on all the products we offer so that not only will you get the best pricing, but use that product to your full advantage.
Dental Insurance is one of the most sought after products that we offer. Not only do business owners want the coverage for their employees, but individuals without coverage through their employers request it. Seniors also are in need of dental coverage because in most cases, dental is not covered through Medicare. Balanced Care works with three major carriers for dental plans so that we can make sure to provide you with options while being mindful that you probably already have a dental provider you have used for years. Just like Health Insurance, Dental Insurance will be much less expensive if you take necessary steps to maintain good oral hygiene. This year’s theme of National Dental Hygiene Month is “Keep them healthy, keep them clean” and Balanced Care has a few tips to help you do so:
- Brush your teeth two times daily for two minutes each time – Brushing your teeth two times a day is a critical component to maintaining a healthy smile. Studies have shown that brushing at least two minutes is one of the most important steps an individual can take to reduce plaque build-up and risk developing cavities and gingivitis. Another tip is to replace your toothbrush every three to four months. Toothbrushes can build bacteria on both the bristles and handle leaving you more prone to peridontal infections.
- Floss daily – Proper flossing removes plaque and food particles where the toothbrush can’t get to. This includes between teeth and under the gumline. Because plaque build up can lead to tooth decay and/or gum disease, daily flossing at least once a day is highly recommended.
- Rinse with mouthwash – Both brushing and flossing help to keep plaque from building on your teeth and gums, however, teeth make up less than half your mouth. To kill both plaque and gingivitis germs left behind, rinse your mouth out for at least one full minute with an antiseptic mouthwash.
Children can be a challenge in dental hygiene and making sure they are doing what should be done to ensure a healthy smile all their lives can prove to be frustrating. Here’s a few tips from Balanced Care to encourage parents to promote good dental hygiene habits while making it a fun experience at the same time:
-
Brush your own teeth at the same time and lead by example.
-
Turn flossing into a funny face contest. Turn rinsing into a who can go the longest without laughing contest.
-
Play a song that last three minutes. This will encourage brushing at least two minutes and rinsing at least one minute.
-
Try a variety of toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss. Both toothpaste and floss have different flavors and like adults, children will have their favorites.
