Looking at this picture, you may see a man (who also happens to be my husband) shooting a bow and arrow. You may see a man that is practicing for the upcoming hunting season.
Looking at this picture, I see something far more.
Just about a year ago (On September 21, 2017 to be exact), my husband woke up to what he described as discomfort in his neck and right arm. Three days later, the discomfort was going across his chest and a trip to the doctor was in order.
It turned out that the discomfort that he was feeling was the beginning of what would be a very long healing process. He ruptured a disc in his neck and when the disc ruptured, it affected the nerve going to the right arm and hand. The doctor told him at that visit that he would get worse before he would get better and he was right.
This doctor visit was the first of many. He saw his primary care doctor, a physician assistant to a orthopedic doctor, an orthopedic, and several physical therapists.
Looking at this picture, I see gratitude.
Gratitude because we had choices on where to get his health care and those choices lead to positive outcomes.
Gratitude because the doctors we chose listened to our concerns, answered any questions that we had, and most importantly, helped my husband understand what was going on and how best to treat it.
Gratitude because we have the access of great medical care here in the United States.
Gratitude because of the health insurance we have in place, we don’t go broke attempting to pay for treatment.
Gratitude because John is now able to pull this bow back when he lost most of the use of his right arm and hand during this ordeal.
John went to months of physical therapy and just completed strength training just a few weeks ago. He always wonders if he will ever be to where he was before this injury, but when he looks at just how far he came because of the care he received, he looks up and says, “Thank you, God”.
His desire to “Get back to life” was inspiring to not only me, but to every doctor and physical therapist that treated him.
When I see this picture, I see more than a man pulling back a bow.
I see hope.
I see gratitude.
I see a blessing.
I see that insurance helped us in another time of need.
When I see this picture, I see a man getting back to life.
When I see this picture, I thank God for the insurance that helped him to do just that.
