Preventative Health Services

Did you know or realize that every healthcare plan offers free preventative health services for adults, women, and children?   As long as these services are provided by a network provider, these services do not get applied to your deductible and no copayment or coinsurance is required.

Today, the focus will be on children.  The following is a list of preventative health services that every plan must offer.   They are:

  • Alcohol and Drug Assessments for adolescents
  • Autism screening for children at ages 18 and 24 months
  • Behavioral assessments for children at the following ages – 0 -11 months;  1 – 4 years old;  5 – 10 years old; 11 – 14 years old; 15 – 17 years old
  • Blood pressure screening for children at the following ages – 0 – 11 months; 1 – 4 years old; 5 – 10 years old; 11 – 14 years old; 15 – 17 years old
  • Cervical Dysplasia screening for sexually active females
  • Depression screening for adolescents
  • Development screening for children under the age of 3
  • Dyslipidemia screening for children at higher risks of of lipid disorders at the following ages – 1 – 4 years old; 5 – 10 years old; 11 – 14 years old; 15 – 17 years old
  • Flouride Chemoprevention Supplements for children without flouride in their water
  • Gonorrhea Prevention Medication – For the eyes of all newborns
  • Hearing screening for all newborns
  • Height, Weight, and Body Mass Index measurements at the following ages – 0 -11 months; 1 – 4 years old; 5 – 10 years old; 11 – 14 years old; 15 – 17 years old
  • Hematocrit or Hemoglobin screening for children
  • Hemoglobinpathies or sickle cell screening for newborns
  • HIV screening for adolescents of high risk
  • Vision screening of all children
  • Hypothyroidism screening of all newborns
  • Iron Supplements for children ages 6 – 12 months at risk for anemia
  • Lead screening for children at risk of exposure
  • Medical History for all children throughout development and the following ages – 0 – 11 months; 1 – 4 years old; 5 – 10 years old; 11 – 14 years old; 15 – 17 years old
  • Obesity screening and counseling
  • Oral health risk assessment for young children -0 – 11 months; 1 – 4 years old; 5 – 10 years old
  • Phenylketonuria (PKU) screening for newborns
  • Sexually Transmitted Infection prevention and counseling for adolescents at high risk
  • Tuberculin for testing of children at high risk of tuberculosis at the following ages – 0 – 11 months; 1 – 4 years old; 5 – 10 years old; 11 – 14 years old; 15 – 17 years old

The last thing that every healthcare plan has to offer is immunization vaccines for children from birth to age 18.    Dosages and recommended ages vary depending on the vaccine.   The following vaccines are required:

  • Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis
  • Haemophilus InfluenzaType B
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Human Papillomavirus
  • Inactivated Poliovirus
  • Influenza (Flu shot)
  • Measles
  • Meningoccal
  • Pneumoccal
  • Rotavirus
  • Varicella
